When we're talking about grammar with regard to the trivium, we aren't necessarily talking about the nuts and bolts of the language. The grammar stage is the beginning stage where students acquire not just words & numbers, but the classes of words and numbers, (adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc & whole numbers, integers, fractions, etc). The principles of language, vocabulary, & experience regarding the subject at hand. Don't forget, math is a language that describes reality numerically.
This is a good place to talk about etymology, where we learn about words and their origins. Eventually, they will be an entire page dedicated to etymology. My older son credits etymology and his study of it as the reason he did so well on the English portion of the GED. The equivalent in mathematics would basically be math history, learning about the men (and women) who gave their names to numbers and formulae. Avogadro's number for example, who was Avogadro? And what was he counting? What is Planck's constant?
When the Montessorians are talking about the grammar stage, it's not just the classical definition that may come to mind where you think of rules about sentence structure and how to use commas and so on. They're also talking about the language in words that come with the subject or topic and also basic principles.
Sailing and boating, has its own vocabulary and "grammar". The front of the boat is fore, the back aft. The Portside in relation to this is the left side if you are facing fore ward, and is marked with a red light. The starboard side is the right side, and is marked with a green light. An easy way to remember: Port wine is red and "left" and "port" both have four letters.
When we are talking about grammar, we are talking about the names of things too, not just sentence structure or rules. Numbers have names. Mathematics has its own vocabulary and terms. There is a difference between words and terms. It is important to understand when we are talking about grammar in this sense it also includes vocabulary and we are talking about basic principles too.
Bruce Lipton uses a great analogy which can be applied here, grammar is like the download stage, logic is where we think about what we downloaded, rhetoric is where we express knowledge or ideas about the subject using the grammar and logic we have learned. Acquire information, think about information, express information. Learn basic principles, think about basic principles, express basic principles using logic and reasoning and grammar. Learn more on the trivium page.

Here is a presentation to help you explain and experience numbers and their values as compared to one. What's the difference between hundred and thousand? if all you know is that 1000 has one more zero than 100 you are going to have a bad time, yet for many students their experience of numbers and exponents is limited to counting zeros. How could we visualize one ten thousandth? Use the big blue square and call it one. Or we could call the big blue square one million depending on what we are wanting to purvey.

Pro tip: When you are first teaching math think of it like teaching English. Numbers are modifiers or adjectives. Four hundred as opposed to four thousand...four is the modifier.
With base ten manipulatives the difference between the red hundreds and the green thousands is much more experiential than just looking at 400 and 4,000 or 4 x 10² and 4 x 10³. At first a lot of math is just vocabulary. Learning the names of the blocks...and addends are just synonyms...10 is the same as 9 + 1, 8 + 2 etc, 42 could be 6 x 7 or 7 x 6 or 21 + 21...which is the same as 7 x 3 plus 7 x 3. When you are playing with blocks, this is all visually obvious.
Rhetoric i found this page looking for links to grammar courses but it will eventually end up on the rhetoric page when i get around to building it.
